I received an email recenly from an "Internet Marketing Guru". Here's what he said:
Imagine you're building a house all by yourself. You go out
and buy all the tools. Hammer, saw, drill, measuring tape,
shovel, nails, screws, and truckloads of lumber, windows
and fixtures, etc.
Now you have a whole pile of tools and materials sitting in the
middle of an empty lot. You've learned how to use the hammer.
You've learned how to use the saw. You've learned how to use
the drill, measure wood, and all of that stuff.
Does that mean you know how to actually build the house?
But he assumes, like every other marketing guru out there, that you've learned how to use the hammer and the saw. They tell you to build your house, create 'curb appeal', etc. and never teach you how to use the tools! You're supposed to have learned that already. How? Where?
Let's carry the analogy a little further and assume you are building a bricks and mortar store. The first thing you need is a foundation. Without a solid foundation, nothing else will get done. That's your computer. That means computer maintenance and security come first.
Next, you build the store. That's your web site. The name of your store is your domain name.
Finally, you are ready to market to the public. But you have to learn to use the tools first. At the very least, if you are going to hire a contractor to build your store, you need to be able to tell him exactly what you want and know whether or not he is ripping you off.
Then you can move into the methods of marketing, attracting visitors, keeping a customer list, upselling, and all the other things that go into an online business.
